Project Management Basics       PMAP_BM1

This is the first phase of a concentrated program that is equivalent a conventional college course to introduce the basics of project management. The first session (BM1) is designed as a stand-alone introduction seminar to explain the nature of project management as a tool for people who are faced with a unique assignment in an otherwise routine business environment. It is also useful for people with extensive work experience in the trades or other endeavors that may consider a change in focus away from physical labour. However, if you are planning to take the full training course then you are advised to look at PMAP-PMB following.

  • This course can be adapted to (an) in-depth tutorial workshop(s) on project management for senior managers and executives that want a better handle on the project management process.

The impetus for this course was as an overview for people engaged in physical labour, which gets more demanding as they age, to give them some insight into opportunities to develop into a supervisory position. This is based on some early coaching work for someone in a construction trade who, due to an accident, found it difficult to be re-integrated in his former occupation. It struck as a sensible opportunity for people to learn new skills but to also leverage the experience gained in the trade. We expanded the scope of this orientation course to include people at all levels in an organization who have heard about a project paradigm, but who have not had the opportunity to learn much more about what it can do for them.

Project Management Overview

The first part of this course is designed to provide (an) in-depth tutorial workshop(s) on project management for senior managers and executives that want a better handle on the project management process. This helps project managers to understand the role of stakeholders and sponsors in the project as we look at how senior management is focused on outcome. The temporary nature of projects is discussed, as will be the reporting and communications requirements. This is an opportunity for meeting a team, and establishing the ground-rules for the project organization.

  • This kind of session is very useful as part of a project kick-off, when the different participants in the project are introduced, and where we set expectations for how the project team and stakeholders will interact.

Project Management Concepts

This program is either first in a series to teach project management basics or it can be used as a simple introductory course to help people learn about project management careers. It is ideal for people who matured in a trade or technical role and consider a transition to a project management career opportunity, but need a good understanding of what it is and what challenges they have to learn to deal with. It also works well for people in a non-technical (business) role that need to learn about working in project mode rather than line mode assignments. For participants eager for more information on this subject we have 3 follow-on workshops described in PMAP-BPM.

Here we review the highlights of PMBOK project management processes (based on PMBOK-5) and the nature of the knowledge level in different areas that is expected of a person that starts out in their project management career. We will explore different options to structure work experience in order to build a resume that could be a 7 year effort to eventually qualify for the PMP exam. By the time the candidate has completed the project simulation they are in a better position to decide if that journey is one they are prepared to take and stick with. If you are an Executive interested in having well-managed projects it is important to be informed about what the right methodology will do for you.

It is important to make a clear distinction between people that know which software they will use, and people that know how to use software in order to actually plan, schedule, execute and control a project. A major challenge is that many learning institutions confuse an MS-Project™ skills training course with training in project management – as a result they do misrepresent the training in their curriculum. In our course you will see that difference demonstrated.
