Professional Job Search Skills       BTCM_PJS

The most sought-after skills in business today are selling skills. Many people think of selling in a narrow context like retail, but in actual fact there are 5 major areas that directly influence the potential for success in any area. Any new business idea requires an introduction that depends on an individual’s selling skills to gain acceptance for the idea, as well as business- and financial skills to demonstrate a sound value proposition for an implementation project. Selling skills are equally critical success factors for obtaining employment, or starting your own business venture, which is the reason why we teach you how to sell yourself first. This is a common notion, but we may say “Don’t sell yourself short” without thinking what that really implies. You need to create a self-awareness of what you bring to the table when you pursue a job, and how you enable the employer so that they obtain a net benefit from having you work for them.

At the very least, comparing yourself to a “product” that must be marketed provides analogies to illustrate basic concepts. When you are in a grocery store, you expect to pay less for “No Name” brand merchandise – well, the same thing applies in the job market. How you present yourself, and how you relate what you can do to what the prospective employer is looking for, makes the difference in being considered for the job. It all begins with rethinking your resume and what it represents, and how it will be perceived by a prospective employer. There is no room for being modest about what you can accomplish so long as you are honest about what you are capable of.

We will explore how resumes tell the story about your past accomplishments, and how you may (de-)emphasize specific experience or transform that into transferable skills relevant to the job you are applying for. We also focus on career-field related resumes and customization by using cover letters to communicate your unique attributes for a specific job. This is important as well to consider for “uploading” resumes to a recruiting website, where you generally do not know a prospective employer’s job description in advance and where you need room to show all your positive features that may be valuable to specific employers.

Resume creation = the most important selling document you ever create is how you sell your qualifications to potential employers. There is not one specific resume format that is magical to get you in the door – there are strategies for making your resume more compatible with current resume processing software designed to pre-filter candidates so as to not “waste time” for the hiring manager to weed through many resumes. Initially we focus on how to package yourself as a “product” and how to identify attributes you will want to develop or improve in order that you become a more marketable individual for the greatest number of opportunities.

Communication skills = it does not matter what dwells in your brain unless you have effective skills to share that knowledge with people you need to influence. A simple reason for mastering these skills is that you will at some point face interviews for job opportunities, or promotions at work. The skills can be discussed and practiced in class, but it can only be honed over time: use available opportunities in later classes to contribute so that you can apply your communication skills. The most challenging aspects of business involve an ability to formulate and communicate thoughts in a clear manner that helps to build trust in what you can contribute to an employer.

Correspondence = even people that are eloquent speakers can go brain-dead when it comes to putting thoughts on paper in a manner consistent with their target audience. Things that slip by if you elide your speech become blatantly apparent when in black on white paper and there is an unmistakable permanence in what you have communicated in writing. In this session we focus on how to make writing more personal yet maintain proper form and grammar, and to avoid spelling mistakes that can sink your credibility. Make sure you understand how to express facts and recommendations in concise, easy to understand, paragraphs to make your messages more effective in eliciting the desired responses and/or actions.

Presentation skills = another critical success factor is how you present information to share with others in class, or in business, or to say nothing of presenting yourself in an interview. This is most evident in responses to “tell me about yourself” – a subject that you would think is easy to talk about. Here we explore the use of basic presentation tools and techniques to provide an audience the information they are interested in so that the facts are clearly conveyed in order to be remembered. Learn how to convey information with simple presentation tools that help you to stay focused on the message but that do not put you at risk of unavailable technology.

Networking skills = to find opportunities to practice these professional skills, and to polish your ability to interact well with others, we explore the principles of networking. Many opportunities for employment emerge through networking, for example, but also opportunities for learning: you can even find mentors in your chosen career field that can provide guidance to expand on the subject matter with practical, real-world examples that reflect local organizations. Waiting until you are at the end of your studies before you start looking for the right job is not a good strategy: you never know the opportunities you miss out on, and knowing the value of what you are learning helps you to be motivated.
